A teenager was killed on Sunday in a deadly shooting on the city’s east side according to Indianapolis Metro Police. Police say the 17-year-old was shot around 6:30 p.m. on East 10th Street near a church. IMPD investigators are asking anyone in the neighborhood who may know something about this deadly shooting to call Crime Stoppers. Tipsters can make that call anonymously at 317-262-TIPS.
IMPD is also asking for help in identifying a sexual assault and rape suspect. Investigators believe this wanted man is connected to at least three cases dating back to 2013. Officials say the attacks were reported in the north side area between 91st and 96th Streets between College Avenue and the Monon Trail in the early morning hours. They are describing the suspect as Hispanic, in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5’5 tall with a medium build. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers (provided above).
An anonymous tip to IMPD is being credited for a drug bust. Officials say because of the tip, simultaneous search warrants were served last Friday at two locations—the main one was in the 1100 Block of North Olney Street, where police say narcotics were regularly being sold. Seven people were arrested including the main target, Willie Bailey, 34. Officers also confiscated heroin, cocaine, marijuana and $10,000 in cash.
A big move is another sign of just how much effort police are putting into catching the murderer of two Indiana teenaged girls. Investigators over the weekend moved their headquarters for the Delphi murder investigation. Police and the FBI are now working out of Carroll County’s emergency building. They say they outgrew the space at Delphi’s city hall.

A decision on a controversial tax that would pay for a mass transit expansion here in the Indianapolis metro area is on tap today. The City-County Council is expected to vote on the issue at tonight’s meeting. If it’s passed, the county income tax would increase by 0.25-percent beginning in October, generating an estimated $54-million a year. WTHR-TV reports that amount breaks down to $100 for every $40,000 of your taxable income. IndyGo says the money is needed for long-overdue improvements and an expansion such as expanding bus service to parts of the county that aren’t currently served, getting the buses running more often and later into the night and adding three rapid bus transit routes.
Wayne Township’s Area 31 Career Center is offering free community classes. Beginning today, over 75 classes will be offered for adults and children on dozens of different topics. The free classes are only available through March 2. The classes will be held each night from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Area 31 Career Center at Ben Davis High School. Registration is not required.

In case you missed the big moment Sunday night, “Moonlight” is the winner of the Oscar for Best Picture. The film took the coveted honor at the 89th annual Academy Awards after “La La Land” was initially announced the winner and its cast and crew took the stage. PricewaterhouseCoopers, which oversees the process, is apologizing saying presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were handed the wrong envelope. Barry Jenkins directed “Moonlight,” a film about a young black man’s epic journey to manhood.

Congrats also to Oscar winners…Viola Davis of “Fences” and Mahershala Ali of “Moonlight.” They both won in their Supporting Acting categories. Davis becomes the first African American to win an Oscar, Tony and Emmy for Acting. Late night talker, Jimmy Kimmel, hosted the show.

The Democrats’ new national chairman says the party has not been communicating the right message to the American people. Tom Perez told NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, it’s up to Democrats to have a grassroots organizing strategy in every zip code. He said President Trump hasn’t communicated anything but “chaos and carnage.” After winning the post on Saturday, Perez quicky named his main competitor, Representative Keith Ellison the deputy chair of the DNC.
President Donald Trump’s press secretary is reportedly checking staffers’ phones for evidence of leaks. Fox News cites sources who say Sean Spicer called about two-dozen staffers into his office and demanded their cell phones to be checked for evidence. He reportedly asked to see both government-issued and private cell phones.
The father of a Navy Seal killed in a raid in Yemen is demanding a probe into his son’s death. Bill Owens is critical of the planning and execution of the raid that led to his son’s death during a January 27 raid on an Al-Qaida compound. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told ABC’s “This Week” she believes President Trump would support an investigation into Ryan Owens’ death.

Bill Cosby’s lawyers go to court today to argue that the comedian can’t get a fair trial in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. They contend the case has drawn too much media attention. Cosby is accused of drugging and molesting a former Temple University employee at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004.
Correcting an on air report…There will be a rally at the Mississippi State Capitol today (not Illinois State Capitol, Till’s home state) calling for the investigation of the murder of Emmett Till to be reopened. Today’s rally is almost 62 years after the Chicago teenager was killed in the Magnolia State. No one was ever punished for the crime. Organizers of the rally will call on the Justice Department and the Mississippi attorney general to bring charges against Carolyn Bryant. She’s the storekeeper who claimed Till grabbed her and made suggestive remarks to her. She now says much of her account was a lie.
In Sports…
The Pacers are on the road tonight visiting the Houston Rockets. The Pacers are 30-and-29 on the year and have lost seven of its past eight games. At 42-and-18, the Rockets are third in the Western Conference. Tip is at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
The 2017 NFL Scouting Combine opens tomorrow here in Indianapolis. More than 300 pro prospects will arrive downtown at Lucas Oil Stadium to be evaluated for the draft. The Colts will choose either 14th or 15th overall in the first round, depending on a coin flip.

The satirical horror movie from first-time director Jordan Peele is this week’s top film in North America, earning an estimated $30-million in its debut weekend. Coming in second is “The Lego Batman Movie” with $19-million in ticket sales. The superhero movie has earned $133-millionsince its release 17 days ago. Rounding out this week’s Top Five are “John Wick: Chapter 2,” “The Great Wall” and “Fifty Shades Darker.”
