There’s bad news for those who’ve been protesting the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline. The project is now moving forward. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is clearing the way for completion of that controversial oil pipe project. The Corps said Tuesday in a court filing that it will grant the final easement needed to finish the pipeline that has drawn heated protests along the proposed construction route there in North Dakota.
Energy Transfer Partners LP of Dallas needs the easement to complete the $3.7 billion pipeline under Lake Oahe. At issue is the claim by opponents, and backed by history, that the pipeline endangers water and culturally significant sites of Native Americans like the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The hashtag #NoDAPL has gone viral in this fight.
Former-President Barack Obama attempted to halt this project by having the Corps deny the permit for that easement. However, President Donald Trump supports oil and natural gas developments and quickly urged an expedited review of the project once he took office. Trump was an investor in Energy Transfer Partners, however we learned through a CNBC report that he divested from the company by selling the stock to rid himself of a potential conflict of interest.
Seattle stands with them. The Washington state city becomes the first municipality to cut ties with Wells Fargo because of the bank’s investments in the pipeline. Their city council voted unanimously Tuesday night to not renew its contract next year and end its banking relationship with them. That financial boycott will snatch around $3 billion a year from Wells Fargo.
