Two Olympians who raised their fists in protest at the 1968 Mexico City games are being offered some redemption. Tommie Smith and John Carlos were invited to the White House with the U.S. Olympic team to meet President Obama. The gold and bronze medalists protested on the podium while the American national anthem played nearly five-decades ago. Their actions led to suspensions and an early departure from the games, but created an iconic symbol for racial equality. Today, African-American athletes continue to protest racial injustice after the deadly police shootings of black men.
