Today is the start of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. First Lady Michelle Obama, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren are set to speak today. The event has gotten underway with a bit of scandal…an ousting. Debbie Wasserman Schultz has resigned as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee on the eve of the event, which was a move following revelations from Wiki-‘leaked’ internal emails that indicated a bias favoring Hillary Clinton over Sanders during the primaries. Sanders complained for many months that the system was rigged. She’s been replaced by Ohio Congresswoman Marcia Fudge to serve as chair opening and closing sessions during the DNC. DNC Vice-Chair Donna Brazile will take over for Wasserman Schultz Friday at the conclusion of the convention on an interim basis through November’s election. The convention opened this morning with Wasserman Schultz being booed by the Florida delegation and others as she opened the event. President Obama on Sunday night released a statement praising her for her service.
Here in Indy…
Police have been on the scene of a deadly shooting this Monday morning on the city’s north side. WTHR-TV reported a man was found dead who’d been shot multiple times. He was laying in a driveway at a home in the 4400 block of Primrose Avenue, which is just north of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This happened shortly after 5 a.m. Metro police said he didn’t live there. Police currently have one man in medical custody for questioning. He was arrested after a search of the area and a foot chase where they say he resisted arrest and later had to be transported to the hospital for medical attention due to health problems that resulted from that chase. We don’t know at this time whether he’s connected to the as yet unidentified victim’s death. This investigation is on-going.
A follow up, Indianapolis Metro Police are continuing their investigation into what turned out to be a triple homicide inside a northeast side apartment. Major Richard Riddle with IMPD said all of the victims were fatally shot. You may recall, police had been called to secure a property in the 3400 block of Admar Court. It’s there that they discovered the bodies—first reported as two people, then three—and an unharmed sleeping child. The victims are Takara Coleman, 23; Cameron Baker, 25; and Lisa Woods, 52.
Is the Klan attempting to rise again here in Indiana? Has the political climate ripened the environment for it? Well, homeowners in Fishers have these and other questions as they seek answers to who tossed some pro-Ku Klux Klan messages into their yards. Police say a number of people reported small plastic bags with printed messages inside. The messages talked about cultural threats to children, then asked people to join the Klan. Fishers Police say they’re looking into the case, but say they don’t think anyone committed a crime.
The three Republicans who want to replace Mike Pence on the November ballot are doing all they can to influence the state’s Republican leaders. The Indianapolis Star reported Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb told party leaders he’ll have access to Pence’s campaign funds. Congresswoman Susan Brooks shared a poll that she says puts her in a far better match-up with Democrat John Gregg than Holcomb. Indiana’s Republican State Committee is supposed to pick a new candidate for governor on Tuesday.

Police in Florida are now holding three people for questioning after another deadly shooting at a nightclub overnight into Monday morning. At least two people are dead and as many as 16 others are injured in Fort Myers. The shooting happened during a “teen night” event at “Club Blu,” with some of the people in the club being as young as age 13.
Sports…
The crowd that braved the heat at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, saw a dominant performance Sunday at the annual NASCAR race, “The Brickyard 400.” Kyle Bush led a record-setting 149 of 170 laps on the way to an easily won victory. Tony Stewart finished 11th in his final Brickyard race.
The Women’s National Basketball Association is rescinding fines against teams and players for wearing black shirts to show support of citizens and police killed in recent shootings. The Indiana Fever, New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury were each fined $5,000 while players were levied individual $500 penalties. After drawing a lot of criticism, WNBA president Lisa Borders said the league “understands the players’ desire to use their platform to address important societal issues.”

A cool down is in the near future after days of oppressive heat well above 90 degrees with heat indexes topping 105. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms today with a High of 91 degrees.
