Tragedy struck a family on the city’s northwest side. Metro Police say a two-year-old child died at home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police responded to a report of a shooting Wednesday night in the 5200 block of Alameda Road and found a two-year-old child with a gunshot wound to the chest near the shoulder in the garage of the home. The child was taken to a nearby children’s hospital where he later died. Various media reports indicate the child found the gun in his mother’s purse.
Nine people arrested in a gang investigation in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood are facing charges. It’s unknown where or when the arrests happened. More details are expected to be released today. Police say the investigation involved drugs, violence and unsolved homicides. (Click the “more details link above to stay up to date on the latest on this story, courtesy, WRTV-6.)
An Indianapolis father is looking at prison time after a jury convicted him of killing his daughter back in 2014. Christopher Schafer will be sentenced next month for killing his two-month-old daughter. Police say he slammed the little girl down because she wouldn’t take her bottle and go to sleep.
Hillary Clinton says she doesn’t want to get into a war of words with Donald Trump. The Democratic presidential front runner appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday morning for a town hall event. Clinton was immediately asked about recent comments made by Donald Trump. Instead of firing back at him, Clinton says she wants to focus on ways to unify the country.
The political season here in Indiana is heating up. First there was Donald Trump on the stump at a rally Wednesday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. As the GOP front-runner was talking about “taxing the hell” out of Carrier Corp. for taking jobs from Indianapolis to Mexico, police were breaking up a scuffle outside of the venue between protesters and his supporters. Several protesters were also escorted out of the rally.
Next up, is Ted Cruz. The Texas senator is stumping in Indy today. Sitting in the number two-spot in the GOP race, he’ll attend tonight’s GOP Spring Dinner at Primos on the southside at 5:30 p.m. WTHR-TV is reporting he’ll make another stop beforehand at Shapiro’s Deli downtown on South Meridian Street at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon. UPDATE: (12:30p) Senator Cruz is also now scheduled to meet with Governor Mike Pence at the Governor’s residence at 4:45 p.m., according to the governor’s staff. Indiana Republican Party officials say tonight’s dinner is now sold out. In a statement they said they expect 800 people in attendance and those guests will have the opportunity to hear special guests Cruz and Pence in addition to keynote speaker Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin.
We’re also learning Ohio Governor John Kasich is planning to visit ahead of the May Primary as well. He’s in the third and final spot in the GOP race. Kasich will visit next Tuesday, but his campaign isn’t saying where or when. We’ll let you know when we get it.
Several past employees at Angie’s List say they were cheated out of overtime pay. Seventeen former sales people have filed federal lawsuits against the company, saying they were told to do “whatever it takes” to meet their aggressive goals without being paid for the extra hours needed to complete the work. The two lawsuits claim the company violated federal labor laws.

Harriet Tubman will be on the front of the new 20 dollar bill, moving former President Andrew Jackson–a former slave owner, to the back of the bill. Tubman was a noted African-American abolitionist and humanitarian in the Civil War era. The Treasury Department is also making some changes to the ten-dollar bill adding women leaders of the sufferage movement to the back of the bill that features the first treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton. The popularity of the Broadway musical “Hamilton” may have saved his face. Designs for the new currency will be unveiled in 2020.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder says the criminal charges against three government workers in the Flint water crisis are “troubling.” He told reporters Wednesday that the charges, “takes what happened to a whole new level.” The three people include two employees with the state’s Department of Environmental Quality who are charged with misleading the EPA and a Flint employee who is charged with evidence tampering and willful neglect of office.
Flood waters keep rising in parts of Houston as the rain keeps coming down. Seven people have died there in the flooding. A thousand homes are flooded and damage is estimated at five-billion dollars so far. The flooding is now threatening two dams in densely-populated central Houston. Reservoirs behind the dams are at 80-percent capacity. A Corps of Engineers spokeswoman says the dams are not in immediate danger of failing, but she says if they were to fail, “the impact would be catastrophic.”
Kelly Ripa is blowing off “Live with Kelly and Michael” now that Michael Strahan is leaving the show. Ripa took some time off and is now extending her vacation until next Tuesday. The talk-show mogul added the extra days off after hearing the news that her co-host of four years would be leaving in August. Various guest-hosts are filling in during her absence, including Erin Andrews of “Dancing With the Stars” and Shay Mitchell of “Pretty Little Liars.”
In Sports…
The Pacers are in NBA Playoff action tonight, hosting the Toronto Raptors for Game Three of Round One. The best of seven series is tied at a game-a-piece. Tip is at 7:30 p.m.
And the world of pro-wrestling is in mourning and at the same time, want answers. An investigation is underway to find how and when actress and former wrestler Joan Laurer died. She was better known as the fan favorite, “Chyna”. Police say she was found dead in her Southern California apartment Wednesday evening on a welfare check after reports that she had not answered her phone in several days. Officials say there’s no evidence of foul play and Chyna’s manager told reporters that she died in her sleep. Laurer gained fame as a professional wrestler in the 1990s and went on to appear on reality TV shows.
