Today might mean five days before Christmas or TGIF. But in history, it’s a pretty notable date. Take a look at what also happened on this day in the past.

1980: NBC’s experiment went bad when they showed the New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins game with NO announcers. All viewers could hear was the crowd and of course noise coming from the field.

1981: “Dreamgirls” opened in Broadway. The story followed the lives of Diana Ross and the Supremes. It ended up earning six Tony Awards in 1982.

1997: The late President Nelson Mandela resigned as leader of South Africa’s governing African National Congress.
