A man brandishing several weapons entered a building at the Washington Navy Yard and opened fire, killing 12 people. SWAT teams entered the building, the headquarters of Naval Sea System Command, where they encountered a shooter and he was killed.

Chief Cathy Lanier also revealed this afternoon that as many as two other suspects could be at large. Police said on Twitter that one of those two people had been identified and was not in fact a person of interest.

The gunman who was killed has been identified as Aaron Alexis, 34. Law enforcement officials said he recently started working as a civilian contractor.

President Barack Obama called it a “cowardly act.” He is getting regular briefings.

“These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They’re patriots. And they know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home.”, said President Obama.
