A woman who recently marked her 90th birthday said she decided to celebrate the occasion by skydiving with her two sons in Alabama.
Marion Stangler, who turned 90 April 1, said it took some convincing to get her sons, Al Martin, 69, and Jeff Martin, 65, to accompany her to the Emerald Coast Skydiving Center in Elberta at 9 a.m. Saturday to jump out of a plane at 13,000 feet, WALA-TV, Mobile, Ala., reported Tuesday.
“They thought I was crazy. But they eventually decided to go with me, so I guess they’re as crazy as I am,” Stangler said.
She said she had made her decision before her birthday.
“Prior to that, I had decided to go skydiving after having a few drinks. Well, that’s the truth, so here I am,” Stangler said.
Al Martin said he eventually warmed to the idea.
“How often do you get the chance to go with your mom and do something this crazy?” he said.
The trio took the plunge Saturday with more than a dozen of Stangler’s friends from a retirement community in Pensacola, Fla., cheering them on.
Stangler said she does not intend to repeat the feat.
“The free fall was the scariest part. I didn’t think the parachute would ever open and when it did, I didn’t even realize it,” she said. “But I’m very thankful I’m down on the ground.”
