Millie Jackson will be featured on this week episode of TV-One’s music documentary series, ‘Unsung’.

Millie Jackson was known for being brassy, bold, saucy, and explicit…long before it was ‘cool’ for ladies to be seen in this light. In many ways, she kicked down doors of expression for many women that came after here, including Madonna, Lil Kim, and pretty much any lady that had the brass to tell it like it is. You could go so far as to say she was a ‘proto-rapper’, with her infamous monologues.

Here’s a great example of Millie Jackson’s work. It was one of the highlights of her live show for years. This is her version of ‘If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don’t Wanna Be Right)’ featuring ‘The Rap’.

One of the many joys of this job for me is coming in to talk with the folks here about the jams from back in the day. I love to have my memory kickstarted by the staff here at WTLC, especially when we are talking about records that would set the party off without fail. These are the records we try to get into the mix on ‘Club 106.7′ and ‘The Saturday Night Basement Party’; the JAMS that we may have forgotten, but as soon as we hear the intro, we’re right back in a great place and time.

This is a song that has been covered by Mary J. Blige to great effect, but this original version still always gets a great reaction. It’s a disco/house classic that’s held up quite well over the years. Please enjoy this selection, the mighty ‘Let No Man Put Asunder’ by First Choice.

Don’t be scared to move some furniture and jam with us. We get busy in the mix every weekend. Friday nights, ‘Club 106.7′ starts at 9 p.m. and ‘The Saturday Night Basement Party’ takes to the airwaves every Saturday at 8 p.m.

(P.S. – I think more people would have been hip to this song, but lots of folks were looking for ‘Let No Man Put Us Under’. Note the misspelling on the picture of the bootleg record of this song in the post. That was a common mistake.)

Queen Latifah, KeKe Palmer And Dolly Parton Make A “Joyful Noise”

Like all strange pairings, there is a purpose for Queen Latifa and Dolly Parton’s hook up. The two will co-star in an upcoming studio production “Joyful Noise,” a gospel film to be released by Alcon Entertainment.

While Latifah’s acting career has been on fire lately, with her recent role in “Just Wright,” she is set to play the part of a mother of two and new choir directress after the former director dies. Parton on the other hand will play the choir’s widow who wants to take the previous role of her dead husband as directress.

The film will center its story on an unlikely partnership between these two female characters who are forced to work together to save a small town gospel choir after budget cuts threaten to shut them down.

Todd Graff, who previously worked on “Bandslam” is on board to serve as both helmer and scribe for “Joyful Noise.”

The film opens January 13th.
