PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Cyber Monday. Green Tuesday. Black Friday. Magenta Saturday.

Chances are you won’t find any of these holidays on your calendar. Yet retailers are coming up with names for just about every day of the week during the holiday shopping season.

SEE ALSO: The Sex Addiction Epidemic

During T-Mobile’s “Magenta Saturday,” the event named for the company’s pinkish-purple logo earlier this month offered shoppers the chance to buy cellphones and some tablets on a layaway plan. Mattel lured customers in with discounts of 60 percent off toys for girls and boys on “Pink Friday and “Blue Friday.” And outdoor retailer Gander Mountain is giving shoppers deals on camouflage and other gear every Thursday through December during “Camo Thursdays.”

“There are hundreds of promotions going on this time of year,” says Steve Uline, head of marketing for Gander. “We needed to do something a little bit different.”

It’s difficult to get Americans to spend money when many are struggling with job losses, underwater mortgages or dwindling retirement savings. But merchants are hoping some creative marketing will generate excitement among shoppers during the last two months of the year, a time when many of them make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue. And they know that a catchy name can make a huge difference.

“The more special you make it sound, the more you might be able to get people,” says Alan Adamson, a managing director at brand consulting firm Landor Associates. “It’s tricky to come up with something simple and sticky.”

Retailers have done it before.

“Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving, in the 1960s became known as the point when merchants turn a profit or operate “in the black.” Later, retailers began marketing it as the start of the holiday shopping season with earlier store hours and deep discounts of up to 70 percent off.

It’s since become the busiest shopping day of the year. This past weekend, “Black Friday” sales were $11.4 billion, up 7 percent, or nearly $1 billion from the same day last year, according to a report by ShopperTrak, which gathers data from 25,000 outlets across the country. It was the largest amount ever spent on that day.

But “Black Friday” has been a blessing and a curse: In recent years, it’s become so popular that it’s known for its big crowds, long lines, and even disorder and violence among some shoppers.

“Black Friday has become a victim of its own success,” says Adamson, the branding expert. “It has been successful to the point where it has created the opportunity that if you don’t want to deal with the madness, come out on Tuesday or some other day.”

“Cyber Monday” was coined in 2005 when a retail trade group noticed a spike in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving when people returned to their work computers and shopped. While more people now have Internet access at home, retailers still offer discounts and other online promotions for the day started by Shop.org, part of The National Retail Federation.

The day has grown increasingly popular. Last year, it was the busiest online shopping day ever, with sales of more than $1 billion, according to research firm ComScore Inc.

During this week’s “Cyber Monday,” the NRF says nearly 80 percent of retailers plan to offer special promotions. And a record 122.9 million of Americans are expected to shop on the day, up from 106.9 million who shopped on “Cyber Monday” last year, according to a survey conducted for Shop.org.

Marketers are hoping to strike gold again. Many are doing so by appealing to Americans who’ve become disenchanted with big business and commercialism.

Nonprofit Green America is launching “Green Tuesday” this week to encourage people to buy gifts with the environment and local communities in mind. The group is planning to push the event every Tuesday through December.

Green America, which says it aims to support society and the environment through economic programs, plans to showcase deals on its website, including jewelry made from recycled nuclear bomb equipment from online retailer Fromwartopeace.com and a self-watering system for plants by Dri Water.

“Mass culture encourages people to run out of their house, now at midnight, and go shopping,” says Todd Larsen, director of corporate responsibility for Green America, which vetted the businesses it’s highlighting on its website to ensure they meet certain environmental and ethical standards. “Why not wait another day or more and buy something that helps others?”

Last year, American Express named the Saturday after Thanksgiving “Small Business Saturday” to encourage Americans to shop at mom-and-pop shops. This year, it offered a $25 credit to cardholders who register on social media website Facebook and shop at participating stores.

The company says it launched a multibillion-dollar campaign to promote the day. The campaign included TV ads and marketing materials for small businesses to display in stores.

The effort has worked. Small retailers that accept Amex had a 28 percent increase in revenue during the daylong event last year, compared with a 9 percent rise for all retailers, according to card activity measured by American Express. The company did not disclose the dollar amount spent that day.

It’s not clear yet how small businesses fared during the event this past Saturday, but a company survey before “Small Business Saturday” showed that 89 million consumers had planned to “shop small” on the day.

“People get it; they are behind it 100 percent,” says Yabette Alfaro, owner of Swankity Swank, a San Francisco home furnishings and accessories shop that participates in “Small Business Saturday.” “Our customers don’t want to participate in Black Friday. Most of them think anyone making a stand is great.”

Lizbeth Turq, a 26-year old in Deerfield, Ill., this past weekend shopped at several local shops during “Small Business Saturday.” She ended up buying some gifts for the holidays, including one for her mother at a home decor store. Most of the items she found were 20 percent off, she says.

“It’s really not an issue of having a sale or not,” Turq says, “It’s an issue of supporting the community I live in and creating jobs, particularly in the economy we are in.”

More Americans hunted for bargains this weekend than ever before as retailers lured them online and into stores with big discounts and an earlier-than-usual start to the holiday shopping season.

RELATED: Black Friday Craziness Nothing To Laugh At

A record 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites during the four-day holiday weekend starting on Thanksgiving Day, up from 212 million last year, according to early estimates by The National Retail Federation released on Sunday. Americans spent more, too: The average holiday shopper spent $398.62 over the weekend, up from $365.34 a year ago.

Art and Anna Destrada from Port Chester, N. Y., were among the holiday shoppers. They started shopping on Thanksgiving evening at a Walmart store, went to various malls in New Jersey on Friday, and got some deals at Macy’s on Saturday. They spent a total of $2,000 on gifts for themselves and others, including a Wii videogame console, clothing and jewelry.

“We’ve saved for Christmas and put away money all year,” says Anna Destrada, 49. “We stayed within our means so we can make a few splurges.”

The results for the first holiday shopping weekend show that retailers’ efforts to lure shoppers during the weak economy are working. Some like Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and J.C. Penney have been making a stronger push online to better compete with the likes of rival Amazon.com. And major chains like Macy’s, Target, Best Buy extended the traditional start to the shopping season by opening their doors at midnight on Thanksgiving evening instead of the pre-dawn Friday hours of years past.

But the question remains whether retailers’ will be able to hold shoppers’ attention throughout the remainder of the season, which can account for 25 to 40 percent of a merchant’s annual revenue. After all, Americans are still very driven by deep discounting and they’re more conscious of their spending budgets.

Overall, holiday spending is expected to grow by a modest 2.8 percent to about $466 billion, according to the NRF. A fuller picture on spending will come Thursday when major retailers report their November sales figures. But for now, experts agree that retailers will likely have to continue to discount to get shoppers to spend.

“The big question is: How do you close the season?” says Hana Ben-Shabat, a partner at A. T. Kearney’s retail practice. “This is a very promotional driven shopper.”

Indeed, the earlier hours – which meant earlier door-buster deals – on Black Friday seemed to be what drew many shoppers in over the weekend, particularly the younger crowd.

According to the National Retail Federation, 24 percent of Black Friday shoppers were at stores at midnight. That’s up from up from 9.5 percent the year before when only a few stores were open during that time. Of those shopping at midnight on Black Friday, 37 percent were in the 18-to-34 age group.

“Black Friday has evolved from an early morning shopping activity to a late night entertainment,” says Ellen Davis, spokeswoman at The National Retail Federation. “A lot of people stayed up until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. to go shopping, and then went to bed.”

The remainder of the day went well, too.

Mall of America, the nation’s largest mall in North America, broke its Black Friday record with about 210,000 shoppers. And Taubman Centers, which manages or leases 26 shopping centers in 13 states, says sales were up anywhere from mid- to low double digits on Friday, compared with a year ago.

Overall, Black Friday sales were $11.4 billion, up 7 percent, or nearly $1 billion from the same day last year, according to a report by ShopperTrak, which gathers data from 25,000 outlets across the country. It was the largest amount ever spent on that day and the biggest year-over-year increase since 2007. Additionally, customer counts climbed 5.1 percent that day compared with a year ago.

Online shopping on Black Friday was especially strong. Research firm comScore reported on Sunday that online spending jumped 26 percent on Black Friday to $816 million, compared with $648 million on the same day a year ago.

Some experts worry the strong start will cannibalize sales during the remainder of the season. Indeed, many people who headed to the malls after Black Friday weren’t spending.

At the Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, N.C., it was busy on Saturday, but many shoppers did not have bags. Likewise, at Pioneer Place mall in Portland, Ore., on Saturday, a number of shoppers were doing more window-shopping for the best deals than actual buying.

David Van Veen, 25, for one, says he was looking for deals on work clothes. But he says he’ll likely wait to get gifts and other holiday items – perhaps when the deals are better – later in the season.

“I’ll wait until Dec. 23 to start shopping I think,” he says.

AP- A woman who allegedly fired pepper spray at other customers during a Black Friday sale has surrendered to authorities, Los Angeles police said Saturday.

Police Sgt. Jose Valle said the woman who allegedly caused minor injuries to 20 shoppers at a Los Angeles-area Walmart turned herself in Friday night.

She is currently not in custody but could face battery charges, Valle said. The woman’s identity was not released, but police said they plan to release more details Saturday morning.

Related News:Black Friday Stampede At Urban Outfitters

The attack took place about 10:20 p.m. Thursday shortly after doors opened for the sale. The store had brought out a crate of discounted Xbox video game players, and a crowd had formed to wait for the unwrapping. Valle says the woman began spraying people in order to get an advantage.

The incident was among those nationwide in which violence marred the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

In the most serious case, a robber shot a shopper who refused to give up his purchases outside a San Leandro, Calif., Walmart store, leaving the victim hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Police in San Leandro, about 15 miles east of San Francisco, said the victim and his family were walking to their car around 1:45 a.m. Friday when they were confronted by a group of men who demanded their shopping items. When the family refused, a fight broke out, and one of the robbers pulled a gun and shot the man, said Sgt. Mike Sobek.

Meanwhile, police in suburban Phoenix came under fire when a video was posted online showing a 54-year-old grandfather on the floor of a Walmart store with a bloody face, after police said he was subdued Thursday night trying to shoplift during a chaotic rush for discounted video games.

The video, posted on YouTube, shows Jerald Allen Newman unconscious and bloodied as outraged customers yell expletives and say “that’s police brutality” and “he wasn’t doing anything.”

In a police report that redacted the names of officers and witnesses, Newman’s wife and other witnesses said he was just trying to help his grandson after the boy was trampled by shoppers, and only put a video game in his waistband to free his hands to help the boy.

Larry Hall, assistant chief of Buckeye police, said Newman was resisting arrest and it appeared the officer acted within reason.

Hall said the officer decided to do a leg sweep and take him to the ground but the man unfortunately hit his head.

“The store was incredibly crowded, and I was concerned about other customers’ safety,” the officer wrote in his police report.

Hall said Newman, who had a bloody nose and received four stitches on his forehead, was booked on suspicion of shoplifting and resisting arrest.

In Sacramento, Calif., a man was stabbed outside a mall Friday in an apparent gang-related incident as shoppers were hitting the stores.

The victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The stabbing stemmed from a fight between two groups around 3 a.m. in front of a Macy’s department store at the Arden Fair Mall.

No arrests have been made. Police were hoping surveillance video will help identify the suspects.

Managing your relationship with your kids and video games is a tough balancing act. Let’s not get too focused on how old anybody is, but let’s just say I am old enough to remember the Atari 2600 coming out. Naturally, I liked Space Invaders and Asteroids like everybody else but I enjoyed outdoor sports far much more than any video game. As the years passed video game consoles became more evolved but I still never cared too much.

A few years ago my son, who at the times was in the fifth grade, told me he won the World Cup in Brazil. I looked in his room and lo-and-behold a panoramic view of the stadium fills the screen (It was pretty cool). I smiled at my son and walk him out to the front yard and put a soccer ball in front of him.

Related News: Black Friday Ideas For Gamers Wiki Guide

“Pass me the ball son” I ask lovingly.

Everything he kicked went everywhere but to me. I explain to him that when I was a kid, the value of video games were built on how much it compared to the real game. I asked “If you don’t know how exciting the real game is, how can you know if this video game is truly fun?”

Despite being quite young he understood what I was saying and we made a deal: In order to play any video game, he would earn gaming time by physically playing the game and studying its history. Half an hour of reading would get him half an hour of video game play. This was a huge undertaking for me as a parent because every time he gets hooked on a new game, I have to be available to play and I have the research books for him to read.

For years my wife and I never allowed any games with guns into the house. As he got older and worked to keep his character and grades in order we made a new deal: He could play war games if he read military history and watched documentaries I choose, on war. I did not want him to have illusions about how “fun” and “cool” war was like the majority of his friends.

I started by having him read selections from Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power, The Japanese classic Book of Five Rings and other online articles I found on military history and strategy. To hear a 13 year old talk about the lives of Napoleon Bonaparte, Joan of Arc or Shaka Zulu is very exciting. This method has surely helped mature him and make him a more engaged citizen of the world.

The first documentary we watched was on Afghanistan, called Restrepo. It starts with U.S. soldiers in a Hummer driving on a desolate road. “Hey, this is just like my video game!” he exclaims.

“Keep watching” I tell him.

Boom! The Hummer is ambushed and things get very real.

“They don’t show you that part of it on Modern Warfare do they son”?

He silently shook his head. The movie does not have a lot of graphic violence, but it does illustrate the emotional toll of war on all its participants. These exercises gave us both a deeper understanding of world history. Plus we get a lot of quality time together that has already proven to be priceless. What kind of things do you use to balance your kids relationship to the real world and video games? Please post your ideas in the comments section.

Black Friday is a monumental day in American shopping culture. Even in today’s poor economy folks are camping in front of stores, and mapping the routes to their favorite gifts. However according to a new article in the New York Times everything may not be all that is seems.

Professor Oren Etzioni, who teaches computer science at the University of Washington explained the strategic motives behind Black Friday:

“The bottom line is, Black Friday is for the retailers to go from the red into the black,” he said. “It’s not really for people to get great deals on the most popular products.”

Beyond that, the quality of the gifts people purchase on Black Friday are not as high as when we get closer to December. Many stores are just trying to dump their old inventory so they can bring in the newest items. Dan de Grandpre, who tracks deals at www.Dealnews.com stated:

“Black Friday is about cheap stuff at cheap prices, and I mean cheap in every connotation of the word.”

As you storm the isles today, be sure to take a step back and make sure you’re not getting clowned. Patience and perseverance in seeking the best sales may keep you happiest during the holidays.

1. If you saw Samantha B’s segment on the class warfare at OWS, you’d know that not everyone in the movement has access to the same grassroots amenities. Even out the playing field by gifting an iPad 2 to the “ghetto.” Price: starting at $499.00

2. Just a push of a button on this coat and your protester can keep warm through the overnight raids with the Columbia Electro-Amp Jacket. Price: $750.00

2. Replenish the Zuccotti Park library with “the secret” to being in the 1% as written in Russell Simmons’ “Super Rich.” Price: starting at $1.00 for a used copy on Amazon.

3. The joint album from Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa lets your protester know that you support him being a “leftover hippie.” Though High School is not slated to release until December, you can download the lead single, “Young, Wild & Free.” Price: $1.29.

4. No cohesive agenda? No worries. Let your protester know she can toss out those cardboard box signs and change her grievances in a moment’s notice with this eco-friendly dry-erase board from the woman-owned “See Jane Work.” Price: $17.00.

5. Even though your protester might be outraged that proceeds may or may not go towards OWS, this “Occupy All Streets” tee is officially the new button-up. Besides, Jay-Z is only part of the 1% because he hustled his way there from Marcy. Price: $22.00.

6. Not only a handy as a portable snack, but, according to Stephen Colbert, Go-Gurt is also a soothing remedy for pepper sprayed eyes. Plus, Yoplait is an active supporter of sustainability in the dairy industry. Price: may vary.

7. Given the lack of toilets, your protester may wet himself from excitement over the world’s most absorbent adult diaper. Using the same technological principals as NASA, The Wellness Brief makes public urination less of a messy situation. Price: $29.99.

8. Arresting and beating journalists won’t stop the revolution from being televised. Gift this Wired Super Stealth Hidden Neck Tie Camera. It records video in extreme low light and may even get your protester a job. Price: $179.99.

9. Help occupy time with the MONOPOLY Electronic Banking game. The irony is too great to gag at, and the “Get Out of Jail Free” cards could come in handy. Price: $24.99.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Occupy protesters want shoppers to occupy something besides door-buster sales and crowded mall parking lots on Black Friday.

Some don’t want people to shop at all. Others just want to divert shoppers from big chains and giant shopping malls to local mom-and-pops. And while the actions don’t appear coordinated, they have similar themes: supporting small businesses while criticizing the day’s dedication to conspicuous consumption and the shopping frenzy that fuels big corporations.

Nearly each one promises some kind of surprise action on the day after Thanksgiving, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season.

Related News: NYPD Orders Officers Not To Interfere With Journalists

In Seattle, protesters are carpooling to Wal-Mart stores to protest with other Occupy groups from around Washington state. Washington, D.C., is offering a “really, really free market,” where people can donate items they don’t want so others can go gift shopping for free.

Others plan to hit the mall, but not for shopping. The 75-person encampment in Boise, Idaho, will send “consumer zombies” to wander around in silent protest of what they view as unnecessary spending. In Chicago, protesters will serenade shoppers with revamped Christmas carols about buying local.

The Des Moines, Iowa, group plans flash mobs at three malls in an attempt to get people to think about what they’re buying.

“We didn’t want to guilt-trip people at a mall,” said Occupy Des Moines organizer Ed Fallon. “We wanted to get at them in a playful, friendly way, to support local businesses.”

Protesters say the movement shouldn’t take away money and seasonal jobs from the working-class majority it purports to represent. The corporations, not the shoppers, are the focus of any protests, they say. But organizers do hope their actions drive people to reconsider shopping at national chains and direct their attention to small, locally owned stores.

That may not fly with small businesses wary of any association with the movement, which presents itself as pushing back against corporate power.

“If you ask, a lot of small business owners identify as business owners, not specifically small business,” said Jean Card, spokeswoman for the National Federation of Independent Business. “I would like to believe there is a silver lining, but I don’t picture a frustrated consumer that can’t get into a box store turning around and going to a small business. I see that person going home.”

Trying to shop exclusively local neglects economies of scale, job specialization and other benefits that big, multi-state corporations can bring, said George Mason University economist Russ Roberts.

“Don’t punish yourself by not shopping where you can get the best deal; that’s foolish,” Roberts said.

Besides, small businesses aren’t necessarily better employers in terms of wages, benefits, opportunities for advancement and other measures, said John Quinterno, principal at the public policy research firm South by North Strategies in Chapel Hill, N.C.

He calculates that small mom-and-pops, which he defines as businesses with fewer than 10 employees, account for nearly 80 percent of employer firms in the U.S., but only about 11 percent of the jobs.

“Sometimes we romanticize small business – and I say this as a small business owner myself – so that it skews some of our debates about economic and labor policy,” Quinterno said. “It doesn’t mean they aren’t important. It just means that larger businesses tend to create a lot more value-added per job.”

The protests are largely focused on shopping areas in affluent suburbs home to big chain stores. As with the entire movement, the protests bring with them a litany of causes. In addition to protests of big chains, causes include clothes made from animal fur, McDonald’s, homelessness and, in Las Vegas, the low gambling taxes paid by casinos.

The formula is ideal for the Occupy protests, many of which faced evictions from large-scale encampments in recent weeks. With a large number of people in a confined space, the Black Friday protests present one of the earliest tests for the movement in its new, fragmented iteration.

Most protests plan to make a point and move on, a strategy they’ve implemented in some cities with targeted marches for specific causes since the camps were broken up.

“It’s not about specific occupation camps anymore,” said protester Peter Morales of Austin, Texas. “It’s more of, you know, real awareness of what’s going on in our government.”

Another shop local movement, Small Business Saturday, was started last year to encourage people to shop at small businesses on the day after Black Friday. But the Occupy groups are underwhelmed, since Small Business Saturday was started by American Express.

Last year, small retailers that accept American Express saw a 28 percent increase in sales volume on Small Business Saturday from the same day the year before, AmEx says.

“It’s just another example of the banks and Wall Street trying to take the very real desires of working people to have a humane economic system and twisting it to their ends,” said Peter Rickman, an activist with Occupy Milwaukee.

Pam Newman, 30, of Louisville, Ky., knows well the trappings of Black Friday. A former Best Buy employee, Newman would watch troves of wild-eyed shoppers kick, claw and scrape their ways to holiday deals. She’s coy with the details of the Occupy Louisville protest – “There are some plans I can’t talk about” – but said the focus will be on people who haven’t made up their minds.

“Look, some people have printed out the deals two weeks ago. We’re not getting to them,” Newman said. “While we would like to dissuade the folks camping out and `occupying’ Wal-Mart, they’ve already made their mind up.

“We’re looking for the shoppers on the fence.”

One of Downtown Indianapolis’ most beloved holiday traditions is here again – for its 49th year. Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW 481 will take place the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, 2011.

The decorations on the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument will look familiar: 26 larger-than-life toy soldiers and sailors surround the Circle, along with 26 peppermint sticks. Additionally, 52 garland strands with 4,784 colored lights will be strung from the top of the Monument to its base.

More than 100,000 spectators are expected for the FREE Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW 481 ceremonial lighting and holiday kickoff on that Friday. Live entertainment, chosen from statewide auditions and national acts, begins at 6 p.m. with the televised show running from 7 – 8 p.m. The actual Monument light-up will occur at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The show stage features a Santa’s Workshop theme complete with toy soldiers and sailors, peppermint sticks, ornaments, elves in the workshop and an abundance of toys– from stick horses to blocks to trains. The stage centers around a countdown box. Each year, one lucky child is chosen from a statewide coloring contest to help “flip the switch” with Santa and the Mayor.

Millions of sightseers take in this brilliant spectacle throughout the holiday season until early-January. The decoration of Monument Circle is one of Central Indiana’s favorite holiday traditions, drawing generations of families each year to share in the spirit of the season.

As the official presenting sponsors of Circle of Lights®, The Quality Connection represents 80 union contractors and more than 2,200 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) 481 electrical workers committed to the partnership of labor and management working together. Visit www.qc-indy.com .

“The Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW 481 are community leaders proud to better our skyline and our community,” said Tom O’Donnell, Quality Connection executive director. “The Circle of Lights celebration is a great opportunity to continue that community support.”

Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. (IDI) coordinates this event each year. IDI develops, manages and markets Downtown. For more information, call 317.237.2222 or visit www.indydt.com .

A quick look through Wal-Mart’s circular shows that the discounter is ready to take on its rivals, especially in the key electronics and toys categories.

Among the doorbuster deals the circular advertises: the 32-inch Emerson 720p LCD HDTV for $198; 42-inch Emerson 1080p LCD HDTV for $398; 42-inch LG 1080p LCD HDTV for $478; Magnavox Wi-Fi Blu-ray player (with a $10 credit for on-demand movie service Vudu) for $68; 8GB iPod Touch for $225, plus a $50 Wal-Mart gift card; Kodak C183 14-megapixel 3-inch LCD digital camera for $59; and an HP 15.6-inch 250 GB harddrive laptop for $298.

Doorbusters also include $7 and $8 videogames, more than 90 DVD movie titles for $1.96, and Blu-ray disc movies for $5 and $10.

According to the circular, Wal-Mart will unveil some Black Friday deals in stores on midnight — while other, juicier “doorbuster” bargains will be available while supplies last from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

A company spokesman confirmed that most Wal-Mart stores will open at midnight that day.
