@kwellscomm @1067WTLC State & Local #NaptownNewsie News—

The state has extended the emergency status for a Northwest Indiana public housing project where many of its residents have been lead poisoned through the soil upon which they lived.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed an executive order on Friday afternoon to extend that disaster status for the East Chicago Superfund site for 30 more days. The original executive order was set to expire on Saturday, March 11.

You may recall, back on Feb. 9, the governor issued the original executive order declaring the disaster emergency for the area around and upon which the West Calumet Housing Complex sits. That area is made up of 322 acres in East Chicago that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identified as having lead contamination. Serious lead contamination.

Children’s exposure to lead is particularly damaging. Symptoms include developmental delays, abdominal pain, neurological changes, and irritability. Lead poisoning can be fatal.

The purpose of the 30-day extension by Governor Holcomb, according to his office, is to give the state more time to work with new agency leaders in the federal government and continue coordinating with local officials as they work to relocate the housing complex’s residents.

#AccessIndy: Civil Rights Org -SPLC- Releases ‘A Year In Hate’ Report–Analysis So Far Of This Trump Era

Fist - Hate

Source: duncan1890 / Getty

[Listen] @kwellscomm TLCNaptown.com “Access Indy with Kim Wells”

In President Donald Trump’s era we’re observing that hate continues across the nation. Observers are on the look out that America is becoming ‘Land of the Free…Home to Feel Free to Hate.’  We’ve not only got to pray for peace and love…but we’ve got to actively work on it too. These guys apparently didn’t get that…

A South Carolina man is under arrest after planning an attack inspired by Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof.  Benjamin McDowell is accused of buying a gun from an undercover FBI agent. The 29-year-old reportedly planned to use that gun in an attack…that was supposed to be Dylan Roof-like. McDowell traded emails with the federal agent, making the admission that’s what he wanted to do. McDowell is a known white supremacist, and he’s now been charged with illegal possession of a gun because he’s a convicted felon.

Also…A Florida man is accused of a bizarre plot to blow up Target stores in a bid to make a killing in the stock market. Mark Barnett of Ocala is charged with of plotting to blow up Target stores along the East Coast. Federal prosecutors say Barnett offered an accomplice $10,000 to plant bombs in stores in several states stretching from New York in the north to Florida in the coastal south. The plot involved at least ten explosive devices, disguised as food items, which were to be placed on those Target store shelves. The plot unraveled when his accomplice instead went to the police.

Now where does the hate come in? Had Barnett been successful and Targets started to ‘go boom,’ who do you think would’ve been blamed? Who would’ve caught the latest round of hate? (Hate that manifests itself in individual and sometimes deadly attacks on the street and in vandalism and the burning of mosques.) Here’s the likelihood, based on experience. Had he been successful, the word terror would’ve been tossed around like a football in the media, and still, the face that matches that term in this country doesn’t belong to a white male when reality says it should.

The Southern Poverty Law Center Holds News Conference Calling On Trump To Denounce Racism And Bigotry

Source: Win McNamee / Getty

I’ve told you before, here on the show, that I stay in touch with the pros who track hate, the radical right, and other such things. I’ve had them here on “Access Indy” with me in the guest’s seat. They are the Southern Poverty Law Center, of which the late-Civil Rights leader and icon, Julian Bond was the organization’s first president and was board chair emeritus at the time of his death in 2015. The work still continues at SPLC…and they remain busier than ever. This week they announced their findings on “A Year in Hate and Extremism.” They invited me to join a conference call with Mark Potok, a Senior Fellow with the SPLC. We attempt to provide information and resources to the communities we serve, even after this community feels it took a tough hit at the ballot box. Skipping the ‘snark,’ this is about the ripple effect of that outcome and continuous ripples of a Trump Administration in control and pressing forth on its mission.

#NaptownNewsie: Rally In Indy Celebrating Inclusion Today As Trump/Pence Are Inaugurated

BELONG the Indianapolis Inclusion Rally on Inauguration Day 2017

Source: BELONG|Lars Lawson & Timber Design Co.

@kwellscomm  TLCNaptown.com News & Sports  —

A rally based on inclusion and belonging is being held in Indianapolis on this busy Friday as the Inauguration and swearing-in of the 45th American president is underway in Washington D.C. Local organizers say this rally is, “intended to celebrate and affirm Indy as a welcoming and supportive community.” It’s a nonsectarian and nonpartisan way to combat and positively refocus citizens after a divisive and some would describe as a hate-filled campaign cycle, questionable election and sometimes shocking aftermath. ‘BELONG’–the rally–will be held at Noon on Monument Circle with Christ Church Cathedral hosting and inviting you to participate. While President-elect Donald Trump and Hoosier native, Vice President-elect Mike Pence, take their oath of offices and then Trump delivers his inauguration address, expect diverse speakers here in the heart of Indy’s downtown and participation from many organizations including the ACLU, the Desmond Tutu Center, the Indiana Youth Group (IYG), the Muslim Alliance, Planned Parenthood, the Indianapolis Urban League and more.

#NaptownNewsie: Affordable Care Act Enrollment Deadline Extended

Florida Residents Sign Up For Affordable Care Act On Deadline Day

Source: Joe Raedle / Getty

US-ECONOMY-HEALTHCARE

Source: KAREN BLEIER / Getty

@kwellscomm  TLCNaptown.com Health News  —

The enrollment deadline for the Affordable Care Act, also known as ‘Obamacare’, is being extended to Monday. Officials with the federal healthcare exchange sent messages to members on Friday morning saying due to high demand on the previous day’s deadline, Thursday, December 15, they were giving people more time to enroll.

So now, if you want health care coverage from the exchange to begin on January 1, 2017 for yourself or your family, you have to sign up now by Monday, December 19. This latest enrollment period began on November 1 and there’s been a substantial jump, according to Healthcare.gov officials, since the presidential election.

Dismantling ‘Obamacare’ was a major theme of Republican candidate, and now President-elect Donald Trump. The notion was boosted in interviews given by both the House Majority leader, Paul Ryan, and Vice-President Elect, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Pence was noted saying that dismantling it and replacing it will be “job one” once the new administration is sworn-in, in January.

The portal to access coverage again is Healthcare.gov.

@kwellscomm  “Access Indy with Kim Wells”

As voters head to the early voting poll on this last day of early voting Monday or when the polls open Tuesday on Election Day, one of the issues that they’ll have to address on their ballot is the Marion County Transit Plan Referendum. One organization is in full support of the referendum because of improved transportation’s impact on senior citizens and others in this community. They are the AARP. Mandla Moyo, Community Engagement Director of the AARP, which represents the interests of Americans over the age of 50 in this nation, joined WTLC News’ Kim Wells, who also hosts “Access Indy with Kim Wells” at the Julia Carson Transit Center in downtown Indianapolis (across from the early voting polls) to discuss his organization’s perspective on public transportation here in Indy.

Click on the Media Player below to listen to the conversation and learn more about this important referendum on the ballot that you, the voter, will decide either “yes” or “no” for the county  to impose an economic development tax to pay for improving or establishing public transpo through IndyGo.

[theplatform account=”BCY3OC” media=”EKHl97yMOpkg” player=”P2wTKsItKWaH”]

Early voting ends at Noon (Eastern) on Monday at the Marion County Clerk’s office downtown on the first floor of the City-County Building at Washington and Delaware Streets.

What To Look For On Your Ballot:

The Marion County Transit plan referendum question will read like this on your ballot…

City-County Council Special Ordinance #1, 2016: Referendum for Transit Funding

Shall Marion County have the ability to impose a county economic development income tax rate, not to exceed a rate of 0.25%, to pay for improving or establishing public transportation service in the county through a public transportation project that will create a connected network of buses and rapid transit lines; increase service frequency; extend operational hours; and implement three new rapid transit lines?

#NaptownNewsie: BREAKING! Indiana Fever Begin WNBA Playoffs In Protest

Tamika Catchings

Source: David Sherman/NBAE / Getty

@kwellscomm TLCNaptown.com  News & Sports

On bended knee. Unanimously. This is how the Indiana Fever team started its WNBA playoff run at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The team, set to play the Phoenix Mercury at home took a knee Wednesday night during the National Anthem, supporting NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s movement. Joining them, according to the Indianapolis Star, were two players from the Mercury, Mistie Bass and Kelsey Bone.

A team, whose members have previously publicly supported the Black Lives Matter protests to stand against the killing of unarmed black people in this nation by police, made the gesture again in light of this week’s police-action killings of Terrence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Wednesday night home game is a one-and-done game. The winner advances. A win guarantees the socio-politically active Fever play again on the national stage with a retiring star player, Tamika Catchings, in the limelight. A loss could mean more time in the off-season to rally and protest injustice away from media (and fan) scrutiny.

Follow this story HERE.
