Solange Suffered “Mental Breakdown” While Recording New Album

Maureen Dowd a columnist for the New York Times has an article called “You’ll Never Believe What This White House Is Missing” in which she speculates that the reason for the Shirley Sherrod mishap was due to a lack of Black advisers in the White House.

The Obama White House is too white.

It has Barack Obama, raised in the Hawaiian hood and Indonesia, and Valerie Jarrett, who spent her early years in Iran.

But unlike Bill Clinton, who never needed help fathoming Southern black culture, Obama lacks advisers who are descended from the central African-American experience, ones who understand “the slave thing,” as a top black Democrat dryly puts it.

President Obama was asked by Barbara Walters on “The View” why he calls himself black when he is biracial, the product of a white mother and a black father. In answering, Obama may have used a word that may spark some controversy. He called African Americans “sort of a mongrel people” though “true for white America as well.”

Here’s the exchange:

OBAMA: Well, you know, when I was young and going through the identity crisis that any teenager goes through — I wrote a book about this.

WALTERS: Yes. … We all read it.

OBAMA: You know, part of what I realized was that if the world saw me as African American, then that wasn’t something that I needed to run away from. That’s something that I could go ahead and embrace. And the interesting thing about the African-American experience in this country is that we are sort of a mongrel people. I mean, we’re all kind of mixed up.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Yeah.

SAN DIEGO – Shirley Sherrod, the black federal official who was forced to resign last week after a conservative website posted a selectively edited video of her, said Thursday that President Barack Obama “needs a little lesson” in race relations.

Sherrod, who was the USDA’s director of rural development in Georgia, was asked by a journalist at the NABJ meeting if she thought Obama, the country’s first black president, has a blind spot on civil rights issues.

“I think he does,” she replied, adding, “That’s why I invited him to southwest Georgia. I need to have him down there, so I can take him around and show him that history.” Blacks and whites in that region “don’t get along the way we should, but we don’t get along as bad as we used to, and there is some reason to hope we can make it even better,” she said. “He should come down and see that and hear that firsthand. He needs a little lesson.”

A 13-year-old boy died after he was repeatedly shot as he rode his bicycle near his West Pullman home Wednesday night, police and family say.

A neighbor in the 11500 block of South Perry Avenue said he saw a gunman stand over Robert Freeman and continue firing into the boy’s body shortly after 8 p.m.

 ”They said they found 22 holes in my baby’s body,” said the boy’s mother, Theresa Lumpkin as she was comforted by the boy’s father in front of her house.

 The boy’s father said the gunman wore a mask and fired into a crowd. “My son was the only one got hit,” said Robert Freeman Sr. “I don’t understand how no one seen anything.”
