Admission is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. They are available at the Clowes Hall box office, (317) 940-6444, and through Ticketmaster, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27. (Fees apply for phone and online orders through Ticketmaster).

Franklin will be followed in the series by actress/social activist America Ferrera (March 20) and newsman Dan Rather (April 23). Both will speak in Clowes Hall.

Free tickets for these events will be available at the box office and through Ticketmaster beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 10 for Ferrera and 10 a.m. March 9 for Rather.

The Celebration of Diversity Distinguished Lecture Series is a Collaborative Diversity Initiative between Butler University and the Office of the Mayor of Indianapolis, with generous support from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Citizens Energy Group, Indianapolis Power & Light Co., Old National Bank, Radio One and Kroger Inc. Kirk Franklin: “Personal Accountability: Challenging the Global Community”

Five-time Grammy winner Kirk Franklin made it cool to be Christian, placing godly messages in the same heavy rotation as other urban pop music. Over the last 14 years, with hits such as “Stomp,” “Whatcha Lookin’ For,” “Looking for You,” “Revolution” and “Lean on Me,” he ascended to the upper echelons of gospel and pop.

Beyond the music, he’s a highly exalted example of a man who achieved success without selling his soul or his integrity. His message now inhabits movies, television, and his latest book, BluePrint, an exploration of the benefits of creating an action plan for your life and overcoming obstacles.

Franklin’s enterprises include a full-service youth outreach initiative, an advertising agency, and a production company. In a joint venture with Zomba Label Group, Franklin established his own Fo Yo Soul Entertainment Company. His latest album, The Fight of My Life is the second album Fo Yo Soul.

*American Public Television (APT), a leading distributor of programming to the nation’s public television system, will release “The Best of Soul Train” for fundraising on public television stations beginning March 1, 2012 (check local listings).

With the recent death of the series’ executive producer, Don Cornelius, “The Best of Soul Train” provides a unique tribute to the visionary who showcased African American talent in a way no other program has.

Offered to public television stations across the country by APT’s Premium Service division, “The Best Of Soul Train” celebrates more than 35 years of iconic performances from soul superstars and highlights classic musical and dance moments from the series.

Featured performances include: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” (Aretha Franklin), “Dance to the Music” (Sly and the Family Stone), “I Want You Back” (The Jackson Five), “Let’s Get It On” (Marvin Gaye), and a medley of hits by Stevie Wonder.

The Best of Soul Train is supplied by WTVS/Detroit Public Television in association with APT’s Premium Service, a co-production, co-financing and acquisition fund that makes fundraising and performance specials available to member public television stations.

Damita has proclaimed 2012 a year of great things for the body of Christ and plans to creatively express her love for God in many ways this year. The buzz surrounding Damita is that she is aggressively completing her 2012 CD release on Tyscot Music & Entertainment. Her new music has been described as refreshing, anointed, dynamic and lyrically sound.

This week, Tyscot serviced the much-talked-about track “I Love You” to radio and it has quickly been added in rotation at several stations across the country. “I Love You” speaks of God’s endless love and Damita’s commitment to Him, no matter what life may bring. It won’t take long for radio listeners and Damita fans to catch on to the lyrics and melody.

Before continuing, let’s clarify what forgiveness is not. To forgive is not to excuse, justify, pardon or condone what someone else did. Furthermore, forgiveness does not mean that you reconcile with this person or that you invite him or her back into your life. The purpose of forgiveness is to free yourself from the negative thoughts and emotions that so often accompany a grudge. Indeed, a great deal of research suggests that there are negative consequences for those who find it difficult to forgive.

A lack of forgiveness is often accompanied by resentment, which is associated with feelings of depression and anxiety. Furthermore, people who are less forgiving are more likely to be hateful, angry and neurotic. On the other hand, forgiving people are more likely to be happy and physically healthy.

However, such benefits can take time. One study demonstrated that emotionally abused women who participated in forgiveness therapy experienced greater self-esteem and reduced feelings of depression and anxiety, compared to people in standard therapy. Notably, these women were in forgiveness therapy once a week for eight months, on average.

True forgiveness can be one of the most difficult things you ever do. But, through hard work and perseverance, the benefits are more than worth it. Here are two recommendations for how to begin this process:

Remember when you were forgiven. If you are having trouble forgiving someone, recall a time where you were in the opposite situation—a time when someone else was hesitant to forgive you. Put yourself in the shoes of this person. Why did she forgive you? Did you deserve it? What would your life be like if she never did? What would her life be like if she still held a grudge against you? Remember that one day you may need to be forgiven again, and someone else will be in the same position you are in now. If you would hope to be forgiven, it’s right to do the same for others.

Write a letter.You may not feel comfortable directly contacting the person who wronged you, and that’s okay. Nonetheless, you may benefit greatly from writing a letter detailing what happened, how you felt about it, and what you wish he or she would have done instead. Finally, do your best to express forgiveness and understanding toward that person. Think carefully about whether you should actually send the letter — when in doubt, wait a while longer.
