Box Office Results – Aug. 29

(Los Angeles, CA) – “The Last Exorcism” spooked “Takers” to take number one at the box office this weekend. The psychological thriller from Lionsgate beat “Takers” by only 300-thousand dollars in ticket sales. “Exorcism” saw 21-point-three million dollars in box office receipts to “Takers” 21-million even. Falling to third place was Sylvester Stallone’s action flick, “The Expendables” at nine-and-a-half million dollars. It was in first last week. “Eat, Pray, Love” brought in seven million dollars to take fourth place, while “The Other Guys” remained in fifth place with six-point-six million dollars in ticket sales.

Meanwhile, “Inception” moved up a couple notches from ninth to seventh. “Inception” is still in the top ten after its July 16th release and has racked up nearly 271-million dollars in ticket sales so far. The next-highest grossing film in the top ten list, “The Other Guys,” has 99-million dollars in box office receipts.

August 12, Silver Spring, MD — TV One Night Only: Live From The Essence Music Festival, a two-hour musical extravaganza featuring the best performances from the country’s largest celebration of African-American music and culture, will premiere on TV One Sunday, August 29 from 9-11 PM ET.

This marks the second consecutive year of TV One’s partnership with ESSENCE to broadcast the Festival, and only the third time in its history that ESSENCEhas made its Festival performances available for television broadcast. TV One Night Only: Live From The Essence Music Festival captures exhilarating performances from some of the biggest names in entertainment who performed over the course of three nights on the Festival’s main stage during the event, which took place July 2-4, 2010 in New Orleans.

Performing artists included in the special will include Janet Jackson, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Earth, Wind & Fire, Trey Songz, Charlie Wilson, Monica, Raphael Saadiq, Keri Hilson and Gladys Knight. A collection of short, behind-the-scenes vignettes will connect these heart-stopping musical performances with intimate, unprecedented celebrity access that only ESSENCE can provide its fans. According to a new survey from ING DIRECT USA, 61% of men find a frugal blind date to be "smart" and "sexy", but only 44 % of woman share that view. Can Growing Long Nails Control Your Temper?

A man in China has been growing the nails on his left hand for 13 years – to help him control his temper.

Wen Jian, 41, of Changle, Fujian province, says he was always getting into fights before he grew his nails.

His longest nail is 35cm (14ins) long and prevents him from making his hand into a fist, reports Fuzhou News.

Wen said: “When I was young, I was very bad-tempered. I was very aggressive and always getting into trouble.

“I decided to grow my nails to help me control my temper because it makes me think before throwing a punch.”

He is now better known for his nails than for fighting and has even opened a children’s clothes shop, called Long Nail.

“Customers are often surprised when they see my long nails but it has helped my shop stand out,” added Wen.

“A lot of people come just to see my nails – but then they sometimes end up buying something too.”

But his long nails have also brought Wen some inconveniences – he has to keep his left hand in a shoe box each night to prevent him from breaking off the nails in his sleep.

Patti LaBelle Goes To Broadway

Soul and R&B icon Patti LaBelle is heading back to Broadway to join the critically acclaimed musical Fela.

The 66-year-old Grammy-winner will appear in the biographical musical about Fela Kuti, the Afrobeat performer and Nigerian political activist.

From Sept. 14 through the show’s close on Jan. 2, LaBelle will portray Funmilayo Anikulapo-Kuti, the musician and composer’s mother.

She takes over from actress Lillias White, a past Tony-winner nominated again earlier this year for her performance in Fela.

“After seeing the show, I was struck by the choreography and work of [director-choreographer] Bill T. Jones, and the passion and joy that overflows from the stage,” LaBelle said in a statement.

“Fela’s mother, Funmilayo, was a strong, truly inspiring woman, and I am so privileged to be able to pay tribute to her on the Broadway stage.”

Fela, which earned a trio of Tony Awards in June, will also begin a limited U.K. run at London’s National Theatre Nov. 6.

A U.S. national tour is also tentatively in the works for 2011.

Singer Faith Evans Arrested!

Singer Faith Evans is facing DUI charges in Los Angeles. Police arrested Evans on suspicion of DUI Saturday night at a checkpoint in the Marina Del Rey neighborhood. Los Angeles police sergeant Felipe Vasquez says the Grammy-winning vocalist showed signs of being under the influence at the time of her arrest. She was held for around four hours before she was released and her vehicle was impounded. Evans was previously arrested in Atlanta in 2004. She and her record label executive husband Todd Russaw were charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine. The 37-year-old singer was married to late rap legend Christopher Wallace, also known as the Notorious B.I.G. She won a Grammy in 1998 for her contributions to a tribute song for him called “I’ll Be Missing You.”

Evans has a reality TV series in the works as well as a new album slated for release in October. She has appeared in the movie “The Fighting Temptations” with singer Beyoncé and actor Cuba Gooding Jr. She has also worked with musicians Sean “Diddy” Combs and Whitney Houston.

Kimora Lee and Russell Simmons Hold Pricey Yard Sale

SADDLE RIVER, N.J. (WPIX) – People planning to attend a certain garage sale in New Jersey should make sure they bring along a lot of cash.

One-time couple Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons are selling their house and everything in it. The Saddle River mansion, once featured on MTV’s “Cribs” is currently open to the public giving people the opportunity to cash in on all the pricey items.

However, this isn’t your typical yard sale. Some of the items up for grabs include a $200,000 designer bed, $20 doggie bed, $12,000 Persian rug, a $20,000 pair of brass lion statues and two couches from the South Beach home of the late Gianni Versace that went for $7,500 each.

People can also have their pick of a $200,000 painting by Faith Ringgold, $20,000 bronze lions, $7,500 red and blue Versace chairs, $5,000 chaise lounge or $3 coffee mugs. The sale began Thursday and comes to an end on Saturday.

Visitors roaming through the home may want to be careful, though. Signs posted throughout the estate warn people, “If you break it, you bought it.”

Russell Simmons, co-found of Def Jam records and the Phat Farm Clothing line, and Kimora, creative director of the Baby Phat fashion line, split last year. In July, they sold their sprawling mansion for a whopping $13.9 million.
