Michael Wright is part of the men’s U.S. Diving Team that competed last weekend in the USA Diving Winter National Championships. And according to diving officials, after Wright won the men’s 1-meter springboard competition, he is the first African-American to take the national championship in U.S. Diving history.

During the competition, he broke the Tennessee one-meter springboard record previously held by 2008 Olympian Jevon Tarantino.

Wright is the University of Tennessee’s first African-American member of the swimming and diving team. The Forest Park, Illinois native is 22-years old, a senior, and joins the rank of other recent firsts for blacks at UT. They have yet to have an African-American player on the golf team.
