Two African-American political legends were immortalized at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday. Bronze sculptures of the late-Congresswoman Julia Carson who was the first African-American representing Indianapolis in the U.S. House and of the late-James Sidney Hinton, who was the first African American to serve in the Indiana State House of Representatives were unveiled to the public during a ceremony. More than 500 students and officials attended the program which was an early Martin Luther King Jr Day commemoration hosted by the Indiana Civil Rights Commission.
