Drivers around Indianapolis took to social media today to criticize the city’s response to cleaning the streets after the recent snowfall and deep freeze.
A spokesman for Mayor Greg Ballard praised the around-the-clock efforts of city workers.
“This storm was of a historic nature,” spokesman Marc Lotter said to Indy Star. “It was the second-highest single-day snowfall in the city’s history, even topping the blizzard of ’78 in that respect.”
The city received 11.4 inches of snow Sunday, followed by bitter cold on Monday
“Had it just been a snow event, it would have been different from the situation we had with 36 straight hours of subzero temperatures.”
The bitter cold rendered less effective the ice- and snow-melting solution applied to streets by the city’s Department of Public Works, he said.
“We warned people it would be a bumpy ride in this morning and take two to three times longer to get into work,” Lotter said. “But the roads are continually getting better, and with temperatures increasing, the chemicals and salt the Indy Snow Force has been putting down for days now will begin working better.”
