Investigators have a possible suspect in Saturday night’s Downtown Indianapolis shooting that sent five juveniles to the hospital, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Paul Ciesielski said this morning.We have a name based on victim and witness statements,” Ciesielski said on WXIN (Channel 59), however, adding that there isn’t enough evidence to make an arrest. The suspect is believed to be a 16-year-old, Ciesielski said. Five juveniles were shot shortly after 10 p.m. on the west bank of the Canal, between Ohio and New York Street, near the Indiana History Center where a private wedding reception was taking place.
The victims were a 14-year-old male shot in the chest; another 14-year-old male shot in the face; a 16-year-old female shot in the upper thigh; a 17-year-old male shot in the back; and another 17-year-old male shot in the leg.
Three of the victims have been discharged from Riley Hospital for Children. Two — the 14-year-old male shot in the chest and the 16-year-old female — were in serious but stable condition as of Sunday.
Detectives think that the shooting was the result of a heated argument between the suspects and the victims. In this morning’s TV interview, Ciesielski said that two of the victims were not involved and just happened to be there at the time of the shooting.
