  • Plan ahead. Find out what family or friends are doing on their weekend and ask them to join your family for a fun local outing. Pack up the  car and head to the beach for a day of fun in the sun. Or, go camping for a night at a local state park or campground. One of the best ways to “get away” is to trick your mind into thinking you went on vacation.

  • Throw a weekend block party. Make it a tradition. Enlist the help of neighbors and block off parts of the street if you receive permission. Grill, play games and get the kids involved. By forming a weekend ritual, you and your family will look forward to each Saturday and Sunday.

  • Get chores done, but be realistic. Yes, you want a clean house to come home to throughout the week. Absolutely, your house does need to be vacuumed, dusted, polished and picked up. Assign tasks to each family member, but be reasonable. The more you are willing to compromise, the better the weekend will be for all.

  • If you tend to get the Sunday night blues, distract yourself from thinking about the dreaded Monday morning at work. Have a family dinner every Sunday evening or play some games. Keep things upbeat and you’ll be sure to enjoy your last weekend night more.

  • Plan for the next weekend. Have everyone in your family write down an activity they’d like to do next weekend and draw them from a hat or bowl. Make it fun and spontaneous. This will give everyone something to look forward to.
