What a way to start Black History Month.
Music lovers awoke to the devastating news Wednesday that Don Cornelius, music industry icon and creator of the seminal TV show “Soul Train,” was dead, the victim of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police and the Los Angeles coroner’s office.
As word of Cornelius’ death spread, a picture emerged of a man who was bested by severely painful health problems in recent years and the lingering after-effects of a particularly nasty divorce in 2009, including a report by TMZ that the settlement required Cornelius to maintain two insurance policies worth about $300,000, making his former wife the beneficiary.
